We'll start with an update to our New Diecast Page.

THE FORD THAT BEAT FERRARI - SIGNED BY JACKY ICKX

9/23/08 UPDATE: Perhaps the best book on the racing heritage of the Ford GT is 'The Ford That Beat Ferrari: A Racing History of the GT40' by John S. Allen and Gordon J. Jones, updated and reprinted in 2005. At that time, a special Limited Edition of 200 leather bound and slipcased copies was produced. Each copy was signed by the Authors and by 6 time LeMans winner Jacky Ickx.

The Belgian's first LeMans win in 1969 was the fourth and final for the Ford GT. Ickx and co-driver Jackie Oliver drove the Gulf-Wyer Chassis 1075 to a thrilling victory over the Porsche 908 of Hans Hermann and Gerard Larrousse. Ickx crossed the finish line a mere 100 yards ahead of Hermann after 24 hours of wheel to wheel racing.

Only a few copies of this Autographed Limited Edition remain. Originally priced at $375.00, we can now offer this book for just $250.00 plus shipping. The 'Standard' Edition reprint is also available for $130.00 plus shipping.

Click on the links to reserve your copy.

9/16/08 UPDATE: Coming next week: The Automotive Art of Alan Fearnley ($115.00). Back in 1985, we launched The Motorsport Collector with a selection of Limited Edition Prints by Alan Fearnley. Fearnley has become one of the world's foremost motoring artists. His paintings and prints are noted for their detailed and accurate scenes, infused with tangible sense of atmosphere and emotion. The term 'Alan Fearnley sky' was used to describe the amazing color and texture of the Artist's paintings set at dawn or dusk.

This collection of over 75 paintings and 50 drawings published in book form for the very first time encompasses a variety of automotive subjects from the great Silver Arrows of the 1930s to the sports racers of the 1950s and modern day Formula One machines.

Each painting is accompanied by a commentary from the artist describing his inspiration and technique. Further insight into the art of Alan Fearnley is provided by the current owners of his works and comments from his subjects, including the legendary Sir Stirling Moss.

Alan Fearnley's paintings are full of atmosphere, technical skill, originality and humour. This collection is a must for every fan of motorsports, classic cars and automotive art.

From the publisher of the Scrapbook series of motor racing books which feature Graham Hill, Sir Stirling Moss and Murray Walker.

9/16/08 UPDATE: Back from the Reno Air Races and a rare 'weekend off'. Pictured above is Breitling Unlimited Gold winner Bill 'Tiger' Destefani (in the yellow and blue) and his highly modified P-51 Mustang 'Strega' shorty after scoring an exciting victory (his 7th) over 'Dago Red' (another hot Mustang and many time Reno Gold Champion) and 'September Fury' ( the 2006 Reno winning Hawker Sea Fury) at an average speed of 483 mph in front of 80,000 air race fans in the 45th annual National Championship Air Races at Reno's Stead Field. If you love speed, this is one event you have to attend at least once in your life. Next year's event is scheduled for September 16-20. Mark your calendar!

We'll be getting back to normal the next few days. Lots of new stuff heading our way in the next few weeks. Visit us often!

Although we didn't see a cloud in the sky the whole time we were in Nevada, the Chicago area wasn't so lucky. Nearly 8 inches of rain over a 3 day period led to the cancellation of the 50th Anniversary celebration at Meadowdale International Raceway near Carpentersville. It has been rescheduled for September 27. Hopefully, they'll get a 'Reno sky'. Click HERE for further information.

9/10/08 UPDATE: Had a great time at the US Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen last weekend. The weather was a big improvement over 2007, although there were times on Friday where I though the wind would take our tent - and everything in it - and deposit it in Seneca Lake or beyond. The Glen was our final 'road show' for 2008. Hopefully, the scheduling gods will be a bit kinder to us next year, allowing us to get to some additional events and tracks.

The first of CMC's original 1964 Porsche 911 (901) Coupes is now available for $318.95. The 'Light Ivory' color scheme is the first of four expected to arrive in the next few months. Click HERE to order. We're hoping to have photos of CMC's forthcoming Phil Hill Ferrari 156 'Sharknose' Grand Prix car shortly.

This year's LeMans Review DVD will be available in the US in late October. We are now accepting advance orders for $29.99 plus shipping. Click HERE.

Now that the logjam created by the delay of a certain popular DVD has eased slightly, we will be adding lots of new 'stuff' over the next few weeks. One of these items is a new DVD called 'LeMans: Chasing the Dream', a documentary following aspiring race driver Stuart Hall and his 'chance of a lifetime' - co-driving a prototype race car for a top team at the 2007 running of the 24 Hours of LeMans. From the makers of 'LeMans: In the Lap of the Gods', an award-winning documentary on the 2006 race, which is available once again. The DVDs are priced at $39.95 each. Click on the titles to order.

Looks like the US demand for Can Am Thunder was a bit higher than Duke Video expected. Their first shipment sold out in a heartbeat and our restock order, expected to arrive here at TMC about 3 weeks ago, is finally expected to arrive in the next few days. We apologize for the delay. What is it with these Can Am DVDs, anyway?

If you're in the Chicago - Northern Illinois - Southern Wisconsin area and looking for something to do this weekend, a 50th Anniversary celebration will be held at the site of the old Meadowdale Raceway near Carpentersville, Illinois. Click HERE for further information.

Are you upset about the FIA's ruling at Spa last weekend. Sign the Petition HERE.

If you happen to be at the Reno Air Races this weekend and see a portly, middle aged fellow in a Motorsport Collector cap wandering about, buy me a beer.

9/3/08 UPDATE: Leaving shortly for our annual pilgrimage to Watkins Glen and this weekend's Vintage Grand Prix. Since the news of Phil Hill's death last week, we have received dozens of emails from friends and customers expressing their sadness as well as respect and fondness for America's first World Champion. After things return to normal, we hope to list those comments on a special Phil Hill tribute page.

Jeff will be running things until I get back. Hope to see you at The Glen.

8/28/08 UPDATE: America's first Grand Prix World Champion, Phil Hill passed away this morning due to complications from Parkinson's Disease.

In addition to winning the 1961 Formula One World Championship, Phil was one of the great sports car drivers of his era, scored 3 victories each in the 24 Hours of LeMans and the 12 Hours of Sebring. All for Ferrari. Later, Phil was one of the lead drivers in the early Ford GT program and scored major victories for Chaparral in Can Am and World Championship sports car races.

After retiring as a driver, Phil became a familiar figure at Vintage and Historic events in the US and around the world, slowed only in recent years by his Parkinson's.

Over the years, TMC was honored to host several autograph sessions with Phil at Road America, Watkins Glen, Sebring and other locations around the country. It was my great honor to be seated next to Phil at a banquet honoring Jim Hall at the dedication of the Chaparral Museum in Midland, Texas a few years ago and will never forget Phil extending a hand from his car to say good bye at Road America two years ago.

A sad day. Phil Hill was a wonderful man and a great Champion. He will be missed.

- PZ

CAN AM DVD UPDATE: BOTH TITLES SHIPPING NOW!

I'm pleased to report that BOTH new DVDs on the Can Am are now in stock.

Our shipment of the long-awaited DVD 'Can Am - The Speed Odyssey' arrived Thursday (note Jeff holding a copy of the August 14, 2008 USA Today as 'Proof of Life' ). 'Can Am Thunder' arrived from Duke Video on Friday, August 15.

It will take a few days to process all your advance orders Shipping began on Monday, August 18.

If you placed an advance order and need to change your address or credit card information, please do it asap. Or, if you have ordered one title and would like to add the other, call TMC at 800.722.8630 or 630.515.1440 or drop us an email.

If you're leaving new credit card information, you can use our 'old' Secure Order Form.

PLEASE TELL US THAT YOU ARE UPDATING AN EXISTING ORDER SO WE DON'T DUPLICATE THE SHIPMENT!

We have screened BOTH these programs and I can honestly say that there is very little (if any) duplication and, in fact, the two programs compliment each other nicely:

- 'Can Am - The Speed Odyssey' is priced at $34.95 and consists almost entirely of archive footage of Group 7 racing aquired from some very exclusive collections and a fine narration by Sam Posey and Jim Hall. Running time is 95 minutes.

- 'Can Am Thunder' is priced at $29.95 and uses period and modern day race footage along with commentary by Can Am guru Pete Lyons, Shadow and Ti22 Designer Peter Bryant and interviews with all the living Can Am Champions (Surtees, Follmer, Oliver), Jim Hall and Vic Elford. 'Thunder' runs 110 minutes - plus 40 minutes of extensive interviews with Lyons and Bryant that are included in the disc's 'Special Features'.

You can click on the titles to order.

We highly recommend both programs for those of you who are Can Am 'junkies' like I am.

Hopefully, this is the month we can end all the 'where is it?' inquiries and start reliving those glorious days of unlimited sports car racing.

- PAUL

8/18/08 UPDATE: Now that the two new DVDs on the Can-Am have been released, we thought it would be appropriate to set up a new CAN-AM PAGE, listing the numerous items in our current inventory that relate to that classic era. Click on the banner above.

8/12/08 UPDATE: As we await the arrival of two other great DVDs later this week, the 2008 Isle of Man TT Review is now in stock. ($34.95)

There is no challenge on Earth like the Isle of Man TT, the world-famous 37 3/4-mile circuit attracting the best road racers and biggest motorcycle manufacturers. With speeds approaching 200mph, the riders are just inches from walls and hedges as they flash along roads normally used by Manx residents for their everyday business. Through towns, villages, glens and spectacular mountain scenery the dramatic racing unfolds in a two-week festival of speed.

This review brings you every vital moment from all nine races, with aerial footage, on-board cameras, curb cams, interviews, on-screen graphics and more delivering the ultimate look back at some of the closest and fastest racing you will see anywhere.

This incredible two-disc review (4+ hours!) features stunning action footage from every single race, with the best camera angles, informed commentary and revealing interviews ensuring you don't miss anything.

Click on the image above to order.

8/1/08 UPDATE: Due in next week, 'The Complete Book of Formula One - 2nd Edition' by Simon Arron & Mark Hughes is a year-by-year account of the cars, drivers and races from 1950 to the present that provides a superior one stop reference for the racing enthusiast!

This impressive 504 page history of Grand Prix racing features photographs (over 4000 total) of every car and driver that competed in the modern day Formula One World Championship from 1950 through the 2007 season.

A massive undertaking, this is the most comprehensive photo book on Formula One ever published. Produced with the exclusive co-opertion of the Haymarket LAT Archive, which boasts more than nine million motor racing images in it's library.

$60.00 plus shipping (this thing weighs about 9 pounds!). Click HERE to order!

7/30/08 UPDATE: Our initial shipment of 'McLaren: The Cars 1964-2008' arrived this afternoon. Advance orders will begin shiping on Thursday. Click HERE to reserve your copy.

Another interesting new book crossed our desk this morning: 'Motor Movies - The Posters' assembled by Paul Veysey is a large format 224 page tribute to the poster artwork of films on motoring and motor racing. Many, if not most of the 250 posters featured in this book are European or foreign examples (the book was published in the UK) but this is an excellent reference for those of us who collect (or simply admire) original theatre posters. The book also provides and interesting time line for the evolution of marketing and product placement from the early days of cinema to the highly commercial era we're in today. In any case, it's a colorful, fun art book you should have if you're interested in cars in film. $69.95. Order HERE.

Will 'Can Am - The Speed Odyssey' finally make an appearance? The latest information is posted above.

We're hoping that Ardennes Productions will deliver a copy of 'Can Am The Speed Odyssey' for viewing later in the weekend. GMP is sending us a prototype of their new 1/18 scale Ferrari 330 P4 and an advance copy of 'McLaren: The Cars 1964-2008' just arrived this afternoon. 7/16/08 UPDATE: Yesterday, MINIMAX released a list of 2008 LeMans entries that they intend to produce for their Spark and RedLine brand names over the next year or so. It's an ambitious list to say the least, naming 52 of the 55 starters in this year's 24 Hours (What's missing? The two Porsche Spyders and the #55 Lamborghini). All but the Ferraris are to be produced under the Spark brand with an srp of $52.00 (subject to revision). The Ferraris will be released - probably as numbered Limited Editions - by RedLine priced at $108.00.

We'll be posting the entire list to our Online Shopping section in the next few days. Perhaps Minichamps (or someone else) will do the missing 3 cars. Want to collect the whole grid? Give us a call.

We will be closed this Saturday (July 19). We hope you'll visit our tent at Road America.

7/15/08 UPDATE: Last night, NASCAR driver and TV commentator Kyle Petty's annual motorcycle charity ride made an overnight stop at the Westin Hotel in Lombard, Illinois, about 5 miles from TMC here in Downers Grove. I took a ride over to hear Kyle speak and was extremely impressed with him and the work he does. I've uploaded a few photos and mpeg's HERE. If you can't find anything you like at TMC this week, maybe you can throw a few bucks Kyle's way to fund the Victory Junction Gang children camps. I guarantee it will make you feel better while you wait for that bloody Can Am DVD!!!

You can make your donation (and also follow along with this year's ride) at Kyle Petty Charity Ride.

6/23/08 UPDATE: Here's a very cool new book for those of us interested in the early 'over the road' road races:

Classic Motorsport Routes: 30 Legendary Routes You Can Drive Today by Richard Meaden / Foreword by Vic Elford.

Motorsport Journalist Richard Meaden explores the routes on which some of the world's greatest road races and rallies have been contested by the legends of the sport over the past 100 years.

This well illustrated book features a mixture of period and modern day color photographs along with maps of such legendary circuits as Reims, LeMans, the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit and Pescara along with the great over-the-road long distance events like the Targa Florio, Mille Miglia, Carrera Panamericana and Isle of Man TT and Manx events.
